Mentee Experience Continued

As the quarter goes on I see things getting a little bit more difficult with my mentee. This is due to the fact that its mid-term time and they fell that my support isn't needed at this current time. They already have have professor, faculty, and staff stressing them out and having someone else in their ear is just to much. What my mentees fails to recognize is as a colleague and a friend I'm not there to be they boss, I'm just the intervening factor that holds one of many keys to success. This is guiding them in the right direction with expectation of success and settling for nothing less. As I sit down my mentees and express this to them they begin to understand. A mentor is can be used resource like no one else can. They have been through the class or university and have a students point of view. Now they pass the knowledge right down to you. Though they expect a lot they just want to see you succeed, and not make they same mistakes they did in their past history. By taking this my mentee now understand why attempt to invest so much time and have so much demand.

  1. Lahaji,
I completely agree with you on this. As the quarter goes on it does become more and more difficult to connect with my mentees as well. I think that maybe the dance instructor needs to re-mention the use of us and what they are able to get out of it. Maybe if they were told that we were learning valuable information that could help them in their studies not only for now, but for the future too, they might be more interested in connecting with us. I have lost almost all contact with one of my mentees, she won't respond to my emails or texts so I am just assuming at this point she is 'done' with my help. My other mentee is thankfully open to the idea of still meeting with me. I think that if in the future we make these classes more colaborative future students will not run into this problem as much. I think you made a good point about how they have alot of other people pressuring them as well. And you are right, we could be more helpful to them because we want to see them succeed.

  2. Lahaji,
I like how you understand that the lack of connection with your mentees could be in relation to the quarter and understanding the pressures they are feeling outside;yet you persisted in making contact with your mentee to let them know you are a resource and not another pressure but an avenue of insight and experience that is there to support them. Great post! Have an awesome day, Christina
